Welcome to the website of the
NZ Rotuman Community

About Us
The NZ Rotuman Community Incorporated is a community group whose members have links and/or an interest in Rotuma.

Rotuman’s are a separate ethnic group with their own distinct language, culture and identity.

As part of its objectives, the Group, together with it's partner organisations, including the Auckland Rotuman Fellowship Group Incorporated (ARFGI) and the Rotuman Language Collective :

  • promotes, teaches and celebrates the Rotuman language & culture
  • advocates for the needs and the views of the Rotuman communities
  • works to enhance & improve the well-being of humanity

ARFGI took the iniative to organise the world's first-ever language week for Rotumans in 2018.

The Rotuman Language Weeks are now celebrated throughout NZ, with participants from all over the world.

And through the efforts and advocacy of ARFGI, the NZ Government also now supports the Rotuman Language Week.

The Group has helped setup another world first - a community centre for Rotumans - the NZ Rotuman Community Centre in 2020.

The Rotuman language is listed on the UNESCO List of Endangered Languages as "Definitely Endangered".

Rotuma consists of the island of Rotuma and its nearby islets, and is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, about 500 kms north of Fiji, and 500 kms west of Wallis & Futuna.

Rotuma was annexed by the British on 13 May 1881 (‘Rotuma Day’).  Although Rotuma is its own nation, it is currently administered by Fiji as a dependency.

Rotuma is described as an "untouched paradise" with some of the world's most pristine and beautiful beaches.
